Over the last several months, Titian’s Saint Mark Enthroned with Saints Cosmas and Damian, Roch and Sebastian and its frame from the sacristy of the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute received conservation treatment to remove an infestation of wood worm, secure areas of flaking paint, and to remove a thick layer of grime and dust that had accumulated on the surface of the painting.
On Friday, June 19, 2015, the Venetian community joined members of the Save Venice Board of Directors for the presentation of this impressive restoration. Presenters included Don Fabrizio Favaro, parish priest of the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute, Amalia Donatella Basso, project supervisor from the Superintendency of Fine Arts of Venice, and restorer Valentina Piovan. During the event, the painting was displayed in front of the altar in which it is housed, allowing guests to view Titian’s striking details up close.
The restoration of this painting was made possible thanks to a generous gift from David & Ellen Rosand in honor of Melissa Conn, and an anonymous donor in honor of David Rosand.
